SIVANANDA DHANWANTARI  - ashram and spiritual community

The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre is a non-profit organisation founded in 1957 by Swami Vishnudevananda and named in honour of his teacher H.H. Sri Swami Sivananda Saraswati Maharaj, one of the most influential spiritual teachers of the twentieth century. The ashram stay will feature classes in yoga and vedanta,  preserving its purity and tradition dating back several thousand years. The Ashram is set in twelve acres of tropical splendour in the foothills of Kerala’s Western Ghats. The natural beauty of Neyyar Dam lake, the forested surroundings, the cool green coconut tree groves and colourful flower-filled views offer an ideal atmosphere for the practice of yoga and meditation.

The ashram accomodation is comfortable and clean but basic, encouraging a humble, spiritual lifestyle. The daily schedule in the ashram is rigorous with early morning chanting (satsang) and several classes throughout the day. However you can participate in as much or as little as you choose.

KERALA BACKWATERS BOAT TRIP - a day trip

Step into a serene and picturesque world on our boat day trip through Kerala's backwaters. You'll glide along calm waterways, visiting charming villages where you can witness local women expertly crafting things from coconut leaves. These villages offer a glimpse into the unhurried and simple life of Kerala's people. As you soak in the breathtaking natural beauty, you'll encounter a variety of birds and lush greenery. You'll also have the chance to see how coconut husks are turned into useful ropes and mats, a skill that has been passed down for generations. This journey is an opportunity to connect with the heart and soul of Kerala's backwaters, appreciating its rich culture and traditions, while enjoying the beauty of nature and the warmth of its people. It's a day filled with unique experiences you won't want to miss!

Edwina says 'I remember when I first visited Kerala, one of my most favorite memories is the day we spent in the backwaters. The wild life was incredible, the people were divine and I loved visiting the villages, buying dried bananas and bags of local cashews to gorge on. Then there was lunch! Me being the foodie that I am, the local samba and how they cooked it all fresh for us on a little island on a wood fire enthralled me. I can't wait to share it with you too.'

AMMA'S ASHRAM - in the backwaters of Kerala

The home of a modern day female saint. When people come to Amritapuri Ashram for the first time, they are almost always surprised—a remote fishing village on a small island cradled between the backwaters and the Arabian Sea has become the centre of a silent spiritual revolution.

Katie says 'I have visited Amma's ashram in India twice now and both times been humbled by it's magic. The ashram feeds hundred of devotees every day (the food preparation and distribution alone is something you'll never see again!) as well as running local schools and hospitals. Amma is a true living saint and although we may not get to meet her in person (we might if we're lucky but the ashram can't guarantee it) just being in the presence of her radiant energy and disciples is true medicine for weary souls.'

ART GALLERIES, CAFES AND BOUTIQUES - Kerala is rich in contemporary and traditional culture.

Edwina says 'There is one thing that really surprised me on my first trip to Kerala and that was the inspiring contemporary art galleries, housed in gorgeous heritage buildings with bustling cafes attached. The art and and culture scene is thriving from local artists to international events.

I also adored the cute little boutiques with stunning Indian fashion designers, antique shops and interesting handicrafts, not to mention the eclectic mix of jewellery.

Whether it's meandering through art galleries and museums or kicking back with a cold coffee in a cafe you will love Kochi.'

Wonderful, colourful vibrant India!

'I knew when this trip was offered it was for me. I didn’t want a Western style tour of India, I wanted to have my soul touched, to immerse myself into the spiritual and soak up the history. It was everything I hoped for and more.'

A little more about the Ashram visits for this trip from Katie

For many years people have asked me 'where should I go for a spiritual experience in India?' and for years I have been sending them to Amma's Ashram and the Sivananda Ashram. So many have come back to tell me what a great time they had.

SIVANANDA ASHRAM: My own teachers, Jivamukti Founders Sharon Gannon and David Life did their own first teacher training as students in the Sivananda Ashram. I feel it's part of my lineage. I also did teacher training there myself many moons ago. It is the perfect balance of authentic ashram living (early mornings, humble accomodation, rigorous spiritual discipline) and accessibility for Western people (you can still get a nice sweet chai and the rooms do have hot water!).

The ayurvedic clinic attached to the Ashram is very special and you'll be able to get massages and all range of treatments during our stay.

AMMA'S ASHRAM: An incongruous pink sky-scrapper in the middle of the remote backwaters - Amma's ashram is a sight to behold. The story of Amma (known as the 'Hugging Saint') is truly remarkable. She grew up in a humble fishing village yet had a connection to God so strong she went on to create a legacy and serve hundreds of thousands of people the world over. This will be a spiritual highlight of our trip and I can't wait to go back.

About Edwina and Katie

If you've arrived here you probably know us already but here's a little introduction anyway.

Both of us have been travelling in India many times over many years. Between us we've got nearly three decades of experience 'on the ground'. India has changed (just a bit!) in that time but what hasn't changed is our love for it. We took our first sold-out pilgrimage group to India in January 2024 and the trip was a huge success. We will return in January 2025 and we'd love you to join us.
